These traumatic events are the reason Gifty searches for answers not only through religion but also through scientific exploration. The book isn’t just about grief and identity but an exploration of how neuroscience mixes with human suffering, spiritual longing, and the need for meaning. By incorporating complex scientific concepts such as addiction, depression, and reward behavior into the narrative, Gyasi develops her characters in a way that makes them more emotionally and intellectually rich, especially Gifty. Through her, the novel also raises important ethical questions about how far science can and should go in its pursuit to explain pain.
Gifty’s dual identity, rooted in her Ghanaian heritage and shaped by her upbringing in Alabama, has created a sense of cultural and emotional disconnection. Gyasi uses Gifty’s scientific training not only to explore trauma but highlights the limits of knowledge as well. The lab offers logic, structure, and predictability, elements that are missing from Gifty’s rough childhood. Yet, for all her experiments and data sets, science fails to answer the deeper existential questions: Why do we suffer? What makes a life meaningful? Gyasi also uses symbolism to enrich the narrative. The lab mice, repeatedly conditioned, manipulated, and observed, mirror Gifty’s own sense of being controlled by societal expectations, cultural identity, grief, and academic pressure. The themes of light and darkness show her internal struggle. Darkness represents depression, doubt, and chaos. While light represents faith, understanding, and clarity. These symbols help readers have a better understanding on the scientific and emotional experiences more easily.
