In my paper, I will write about how Muriel Rukeyser uses different kinds of writing in The Book of the Dead to help us understand the silicosis disaster. She shows that the disease was not just a health problem, but also caused by unfair and unsafe working conditions. I will talk about how she uses science in “The Disease” to explain what silicosis does to the body. In “The Doctors,” she uses court records to show that the company knew the job was dangerous. I will also use “George Robinson: Blues” to show a worker’s personal story. In “West Virginia,” she talks about the land and history, and in “Statement for Myself,” she shares her own thoughts about what she saw. These examples help show the full truth about what happened.
