Gifty grew up in Alabama in a very religious Ghanaian family. Her mom worked hard to raise Gifty and Nana alone after their dad left. Nana was good at sports, but after getting hurt, he became addicted to pain pills. He later started using heroin and passed away. After that, Gifty’s mom became very sad and didn’t get out of bed for a long time. Gifty was left feeling very alone. She didn’t know where to turn, so she started looking for answers in science. Even though Gifty used to go to church and pray, she began to doubt her faith after her brother’s death. She still prays sometimes, but she’s not sure if she believes in God anymore. She says, “I used to think I was praying to God. Now I think I’m just praying to a void.” This means she still hopes for something bigger, but she’s not sure it’s there. Gifty is caught between wanting to believe in God and wanting real, scientific answers.

In her college lab, Gifty works with mice. She gives them sugar and watches how they keep pressing a lever to get more. Even when they don’t need it, they keep going back. This reminds her of how her brother kept using drugs even when they were hurting him. She also studies depression to understand what her mom went through. She wants to find out how the brain works during addiction and sadness. Gifty loves her mom, even though their relationship is difficult. Her mom is not good at showing feelings. Gifty cares for her when she’s sick, but they don’t talk much about their emotions. She also misses her brother a lot. His death made her more quiet and serious. Gifty wants to help people like him, but it’s hard for her to open up to others. Symbols in the book, like darkness and silence, help show Gifty’s feelings. The mice in her lab also represent how people sometimes get trapped in painful patterns. Through her research and personal story, we learn that Gifty is trying to understand herself and the people she loves.

In the end, Gifty is a strong but hurt person. She wants to believe in something, whether it’s God or science. She wants to fix what’s broken inside her. Her story shows that healing takes time and that both science and love are important in life.
