Summary

Transcendent Kingdom by Yaa Gyasi follows the life of Gifty, the daughter of two Ghanaian immigrants. She grows up in Huntsville, Alabama, with her older brother Nana, and their parents, until her father returns back to Ghana and never returns. As a young girl navigating a predominantly white Southern town, Gifty struggles with questions of belonging and identity. Despite the six-year age gap between the two, Gifty shares a great bond with Nana, often writing about him in her journal and viewing him as her protector and a source of happiness.
However, Gifty’s world is turned upside down when Nana dies of a heroin overdose in his high school years. His death begins a downward spiral that sends their mother into a grueling depression and leaves Gifty overwhelmed by confusion, grief and emotional isolation. The personal tragedies of losing her brother, watching her mother suffer, and her father’s abandonment leaves Gifty in search for answers. Eventually, this search drives her to pursue neuroscience, with a specific focus on addiction, in hopes of understanding what led her brother down that path and why her mother remains trapped in sorrow.
Moving to a predominantly white neighborhood in Alabama as Ghanaian immigrants, Gifty’s family struggles to adjust to life in south of America. From an early age, Gifty experiences racism, including being one of the only black students in her elementary school class and encountering subtle forms of exclusion. Her mother works long hours as a home health aide, being mistreated by her racist employer, while her father, known as the Chin Chin Man, is unable to find steady work and works as a janitor. Dealing with racism, instability and the feeling of being homesick eventually pushes Gifty’s father to leave Alabama and return to Ghana. He promises his family that he’ll return but that is a promise he never keeps. Gifty, being too young to fully process the absence of her father, adapts quietly, but this crushes her brother Nana, and he begins to resent their father.
“Nana was the first miracle, the true miracle, and the glory of his birth cast a long shadow. I was born into the darkness that shadow left behind. I understood that, even as a child.” Living in the shadow of her mother’s favorite child, Gifty grows up feeling like the invisible child who is overlooked. Nana’s success as a basketball star brings attention, acceptance and pride to the family. For a short time, it seems as if the family is finally being accepted by the community. Everything soon changes after Nana suffers a fatal injury playing basketball, is prescribed opioids, and soon becomes addicted. Nana’s addiction eventually results in his death, devastating the family, sending Gifty’s mother into a deep depression and forever changing Gifty’s outlook on the world.
One moment that I believe shaped Gifty into who she later becomes was when Gifty’s mother refuses to seek treatment for her depression, turning to the church for healing. This furthered Gifty’s skepticism of religion and planted the seed for her scientific curiosity. While working in her lab, Gifty experiments with mice addicted to Ensure, a comparison that Gifty draws to her brother Nana’s dealing with opioids. Moments like these truly show how Gifty channels her personal trauma into a search for scientific understanding. Studying neuroscience becomes more than just a career for Gifty, it becomes her way of confronting, the loss, grief and unanswered questions that have haunted her since childhood.
Shaped by cultural displacement, deep loss and the battle between faith and science, Gifty is an intricate character who is very resilient. One of Gifty’s greatest strengths is how determined she is. She displays this determination by channeling her pain into academic pursuit, refusing to let her childhood trauma define who she is. She survives by being extremely independent, but still alone. Her inability to fully trust or open up to others is her weakness and makes it hard for her to keep friends. In this book, Gifty is pretty much just a young woman who is devoted to understanding the world and herself. Her courage shines through by her willingness to face her past and her drive to still move forward.
