Rukeyser implements a theme of social justice that has a massive effect on her work. Through her use of poetry and literary devices, she allows the reader to feel as if they were part of the tragedy. Furthermore, through the inclusion of testimonies and other accounts, we can experience what it felt like to be a worker as well as a family member. We understand what happened, why it happened, and who was responsible. Delving into who was responsible and their lack of accountability through poetic language is how Rukeyser calls attention towards ignorance and injustice.

She also structures her work in a way that makes sure that the victims’ struggles are recognized, and that the ones responsible are called out and exposed. The theme of social justice is present throughout her poems. Rukeyser uses her poetry to advocate for victims of the disaster by including historical and emotional context and placing us in the shoes of the workers and their families.
