Summary

In the final scene of "Sonny's Blues," the story paints a vivid picture of the main character, who is also the narrator finally witnessing his brother Sonny showcasing his love and talent as a jazz musician at a club. This scene reflects the theme of redepemption to me because in this moment, Sonny is truly happy. Throughout the story, Sonny faces many trials and tribulations. He comes from a troubled past, tarnished by drug use and a path filled with uncertainty, even for himself. Music became his light at the end of the tunnel, his salvation. It saved Sonny and led him to redemption. This performance allows the narrator to finally understand how music helped redeem his brother from the life he was once trapped in. Although music had not seemed important to the narrator at first, he now realizes it is everything to Sonny, it's what turned his life around. As the narrator reflects " Freedom lurked around us and I understood, at last, that he could help us to be free if we would listen, that he would never be free until we did. Yet, there was no battle in his face now, I heard what he had gone through, and would continue to go through until he came to rest in earth." At this moment , the narrator truly understands Sonny and how he releases all of his pain into his music. For Sonny, music is not just a hobby; it is an outlet and a way of survival. By watching him perform, the narrator is finally able to empathize with and truly understand his brother.
